The Minolta MD Zoom 35-70 mm f/3.5 is the faster alternative to the low-budget 35-70 mm f/3.5-4.8 kit zoom. There are three revisions of the f/3.5 and this copy belongs to the second one. The first version features different optics and the third is the only one having a dedicated macro function. The lens is about the weight of an MC Rokkor-PG.

Minolta produced the design as the MD 35-70/3.5 and Leitz rebadged it and sold it as the Leica Vario-Elmar R 35-70/3.5. There are several versions of this Minolta lens, the constant aperture macro version (1:4, close-up rather than macro) is the last to share the optical formula with the Leica and was produced from 1983.

F3.5 isn't that bad. In the macro mode, the depth of field is so thin that I wouldn't likely be shooting wide open anyway. In the accompanying shots the DOF is still very limited at f5.6 to f8. As much as I love the image quality from this glass, there are a few things that I should mention about the overall user-experience.
